Buy the biggest tank possible
When purchasing a water storage tank ensure that you get qualified advice. Three important tips to help with making the right decision are go for big, fall your guttering and use a licensed plumber.
First, buy the biggest tank possible for the area and always think about adding extra tanks to create more water storage. Consider starting with a 5,000 litre tank. You will find that a 5,000 litre tank is more cost effective when compared to a 1,000 litre tank. With a larger tank you have more options. For example with a large tank you can run toilet, water gardens via a drip system, or even connect up the washing machine.
Second, fall all your guttering to enable maximum collection of the water coming from your roof. Also consider increasing the size of your downpipes. You will find that if you are collecting water from just one downpipe then you will require a high level of rainfall to fill a tank.
And finally, use a rain bank conversion system that will switch from tanks to mains during low rain periods. When setting up a rain bank conversion system use a licensed plumber to avoid cross connect and contamination of your water supply. A plumber will also install double check valves and provide you with a warrantee.
